Workshop
A workshop is an interesting space. Loud and dusty, yet very personal and full of details. I share the space with a few old but trustworthy machines that help me in getting the wood to a stage where I resort to hand tools. They are well maintained and adjusted and I spend a lot of time keeping them like this, since thay do a lot of work for me.
The same applies to my tools, an organically grown mixture of european and japanese shapes. A lot of these tools I made (and make) myself, according to various needs. They fit my hand in a way no store bought tool can. This intimate relationship with a tool is crucial for my work.
Every surface of my furniture is hand planed to its final shape. Most of the planes I use I make myself, according to shape and need. These tools are not only extremly sensitive in that they tell me a lot about the material I'm working. The surface they leave is also superior to a sanded one: since the fibres are cleanly cut as opposed to torn, surfaces are more resistant to stains and liquids. Over time and with wear, these surfaces develop a beautiful luster.
